Anchorage Snow Plow Tracker vs Tracking the Truck to Your Own Driveway

What you need to know
  • The municipality publishes information about which streets have been plowed. It is useful. It is about the street.
  • Nothing on it tells you when your driveway gets done, because the city does not plow driveways.
  • On Pro Unlimited you can watch our truck work toward your house live, and every route plan texts you when it is scheduled and on the way.
  • The two maps answer different questions. When can I drive on my road, and when can I get out of my driveway.

Every winter people in Anchorage search for the snow plow tracker, find the municipality's street plowing page, and then wonder why their driveway is still buried. Here is what each map actually tells you.

What the city map is for

The municipality's street maintenance information is about roads. Which priority level your street is, roughly where the plows have been, when residential streets get attention after the main roads. That is worth checking, especially on a big storm, because it tells you when the berm is coming.

What it does not do, and was never meant to do, is tell you anything about the 40 feet between the road and your garage. The city does not plow that. Somebody has to, and that somebody is either you with a shovel at 5 AM or a truck on a route.

What our tracking tells you

  1. ScheduledAbout 2 inches at your address trips the trigger. You get a text that your driveway is on tonight's route.
  2. Live map on ProOn Pro Unlimited you can watch the truck work through the route toward you. No guessing when to move the car.
  3. On the waySecond text when the operator is a few stops out. This is the move the car text.
  4. DoneLook out the window. Then check the city map to see when the street plow will come bury the end of it again. On Pro, heavy storms include the second pass for that.

Why both matter on a big storm

On a normal storm you barely need either one. The driveway gets done overnight, the street gets done sometime, life goes on. On a big storm they work together. Our tracking tells you the driveway is clear at 2 AM. The city information tells you the street plow is coming through that afternoon, which tells you a berm is coming, which on Pro Unlimited means a second pass is coming too.
