Plowing Long Rural Driveways Off the Glenn and Palmer Fishhook

Long plowed gravel driveway with tire tracks at dusk near Palmer, Alaska
Long driveway at dusk. By February the question is where the snow goes.
What you need to know
  • Long driveways cost more because they are more driveway. Square footage sets the price and we tell you the number up front.
  • The first visit matters most. Where the snow gets pushed in October decides whether you still have a driveway in February.
  • Staking is not optional on a long gravel drive. Ditches, culverts and curves disappear under snow.
  • Turnarounds and parking pads get plowed too. Tell us what you need cleared and we quote it that way.

Out Palmer Fishhook, off the Glenn, on the Outer Springer Loop, a lot of driveways are 200 to 400 feet of gravel from the road to the house. Here is how we plow those and why the first visit is the one that matters.

Where the snow goes

On a short driveway you push the snow to the sides and forget about it. On a long one, if you push to the sides every time, by February you have walls, the driveway is narrower every storm, and there is nowhere left to put anything. So the first visit on a long driveway is a planning visit as much as a plowing visit. We pick the pile locations, we push to them from day one, and we keep the driveway the same width in March that it was in November.

What we look at on the first visit

Ditches and culvertsBoth sides get staked and culvert ends get marked so the plow never finds them the hard way.
Curves and gradesA long driveway that bends or climbs needs the snow pushed to the outside of the turn and downhill where it can.
The turnaround and the padIf you need them cleared, say so on the quote call and they are part of the plan and the price.
Wind directionOpen ground drifts. Piles go downwind where we can so the wind does not put them straight back on the driveway.

Why it costs more

Because it is more driveway. A 350 foot gravel drive with a turnaround is several times the square footage of a driveway to a two car garage in town, and it takes several times the work. We measure it and the price follows. Most driveways we plow land between about $180 and $300 a month for the season. Long rural ones land above that, and we would rather tell you that on the quote than surprise you.

Pro Unlimited is the plan most long driveway customers pick, because open ground drifts and every return trip on Per Push is a charge.

What a season looks like on a long driveway

  1. OctoberWe stake both sides, mark the culverts, and pick the pile locations.
  2. First stormWe push to the plan. This is the visit that sets up the whole winter.
  3. MidwinterSame width, same piles, no canyon. Drifts get a text to the office and go back on the list.
  4. SpringThe stakes come out and the piles melt where they never blocked anything.

Quick answers

How long is too long to plow?

We have not found it yet. Long is a planning problem and a price problem, not an equipment problem.

Do you plow the turnaround?

If you want it plowed, yes. Tell us on the quote call and it is in the plan and the price.

What about my culvert?

Marked before the season so the plow never touches it. Point it out on the quote call if it is hard to see.

Gravel or paved, does it matter?

We plow both. On gravel we run the blade so we are moving snow, not your driveway.
