What you need to know
  • The Butte has its own routes. Old Glenn corridor, North Butte, South Butte, Knik River Road, Bodenburg and the Reindeer Farm area, and the neighborhoods around Butte Elementary.
  • It is open country. Wind and drifting are part of the deal and a lot of driveways are long gravel.
  • The borough plows the roads out here on its own schedule. Your driveway is done overnight whether the road is or not.
  • Most Butte driveways land in the $180 to $300 a month range for the season. Long ones land above it, and we say so up front.

The Butte is the part of our service area people forget we cover, and we run it every storm. Here is how routes work out there and what to expect on a storm night.

Area by area

Old Glenn Highway corridorThe spine of the Butte routes. Neighborhoods off the Old Glenn are close enough together to make tight loops.
North Butte and South ButteMixed lot sizes. The neighborhoods around Butte Elementary are the tightest and the easiest to get on.
Knik River RoadLong driveways, big lots, wind off the river. Square footage sets the price and we plan where the snow goes early.
Bodenburg and the Reindeer Farm areaOpen ground. Drifts stack in the same places every time and the operators learn them.

Wind and open ground

The Butte sits in the same wind Palmer does, with fewer trees to slow it down. A storm ends, we plow, and the wind can drift a driveway shut again with snow off the fields. When that happens after we have already been through, text the office and it goes back on the list.

This is the reason most Butte customers are on Pro Unlimited. Every qualifying visit for the season is one price, and out here the visit count runs higher than the storm count.

Long gravel driveways

A lot of the Butte is 200, 300, 400 feet of gravel from the road to the house. That is normal out here and we plow plenty of it. It costs more because it is more driveway, and the important thing is planning where the snow goes on the first visit. A long driveway that gets plowed without a plan is a canyon by February with nowhere left to push. We stake it, we pick the pile locations, and we push to them from day one.

Sign up with a neighbor and you both save 10 percent. Out here it also decides whether a stretch of road is on a route at all. Two or three driveways together is what makes a stop worth it.
