When Do Palmer Snow Plow Routes Fill Up?

Two story house with a plowed driveway in Palmer, Alaska
Palmer, mid route. The neighborhoods in town fill first.
What you need to know
  • Palmer routes are built by neighborhood before the first storm. When a route has all the driveways it can finish before morning, it closes.
  • Downtown Palmer, the High School area and Inner Springer Loop fill first because they are tight. Outer Springer, Palmer Fishhook and the Airport area have room longer.
  • The first real storm is when everybody calls, and it is usually in October.
  • If you are reading this after the first storm, send the form anyway. Some Palmer routes have room and the Buddy System opens more.

Palmer has some of the most built out routes we run, which also makes them some of the first to close. Here is which areas fill first and how to get on before they do.

Which Palmer areas fill first

Downtown Palmer and the High School areaShort driveways, close together, tight routes. First to fill every year.
Inner Springer LoopA loop is a natural route. Once a few houses are on, the rest fill quickly.
Arctic Avenue and Trunk Road corridorFill through October. Commuter heavy, so demand is steady.
Outer Springer, Palmer Fishhook, the Airport areaBigger lots and longer driveways. More room later into the fall, and the Buddy System is what opens new stretches out here.

  2. Early OctoberStaking starts and billing starts October 1. The tight in town routes begin to close.
  3. The first stormEverybody who put it off calls the same morning. Open routes fill in days.
  4. November onwardWaitlist, in order. You get a call when somebody on your route cancels or moves.

Why Palmer people should not wait

The wind. A Palmer driveway that was plowed at 4 AM can be drifted shut by noon on a clear day, and the people who handle that best are the ones on a route with Pro Unlimited, where every qualifying visit is one season price. Trying to find somebody to come dig you out of a drift in December, with no route and no plan, is the worst version of a Palmer winter.

Sign up with a neighbor and you both save 10 percent on top of it.
